Non Fluoride Treatment

Is fluoride harmful?

You might be part of the population with concerns about whether fluoride has harmful effects on the body. There have indeed been ongoing discussions about the matter for a long time and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in Australia has finally published a research paper in September 2016 to address the issue. Please click here if you wish to view a full version of the paper.

What is Fluorosis?

From a dental point of view, too much fluoride can cause a condition called fluorosis.

Fluorosis:

  • Is quite mild in Australia,
  • Affects 17 %-25 % of Australians,
  • Manifests as white or brown spots permanently present on teeth.

If you are experiencing any persistent white or brown spots on your teeth there are options to mask the discoloration. Whitening your teeth can sometimes partially or occasionally completely mask the discoloration, while conservatively bonding veneers on your teeth will completely mask the discoloration.

Please contact Garden Haven Dental for a free consultation if you are experiencing any of the above.

Use of fluoride in our practice

If you are at all concerned about the use of fluoride in the dental clinic, our professionals at Garden Haven Dental will refrain from using any fluoride or fluoride-based materials to treat your teeth and use alternatives instead.

From a general health point of you, the conclusions of the NHMRC are summarised below:

  1. The evidence shows no association between the current levels in water in Australia and; Down Syndrome, Cancer, Level of IQ (Intelligent Quotient) and Mortality.
  2. There is no evidence for effects on muscles and skeletal system (Hip fracture, Osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, Skeletal fluorosis).
  3. There is also insufficient evidence for effects on muscular and skeletal system (musculoskeletal pain, osteoporosis).
  4. The evidence is insufficient to show any association between the current levels in water in Australia and:
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Heart disease and high blood pressure,
  • Kidney stones
  • Low birth weight
  • Thyroid function
  • Self reported health outcomes (gastric discomfort, headache, insomnia).
